APEX
- "Arctic Palaeoclimate and its EXtremes" is a network research
programme aiming to understand Arctic climatic changes beyond
instrumental records. Our particular emphasis is to focus on the
magnitude/frequency of the climate variability and, in particular, the
"extremes" versus the "normal" conditions of the climate system. It is
an interdisciplinary programme that integrates marine and terrestrial
science and utilizes modelling and field observations. APEX involves
scientists from 15 European countries, Canada and USA, includes  geologists,
geomorphologists, modelers and palaeo-oceanographers and is one of the
coordinating programmes for palaeoclimate research during the
International Polar Year (IPY) 2007/2008.

The Second APEX
Conference will comprise two and a half days of presentations on
current Arctic research including that related to the International
Polar Year 2007/2008. The conference will be hosted by Durham University, in Durham City, NE England. It is open to all researchers with an interest in Arctic palaeo-climate. There is a limited amount of funding available for travel support, particularly for participants from Eastern Europe
and postgraduate students.  If you would like to apply for this
funding, please provide a short CV and travel budget and send to Niamh
McElherron (email: c.n.mcelherron@durham.ac.uk) by Friday 29th February 2008.

Keynote speakers:

Professor Shawn Marshall, Department of Geography, University of Calgary, Canada

Professor Dennis Darby, Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, USA
