1. PYRN @ EGU
Several people came and stopped by the poster by the PYRN executive committee (M. Johansson et al.) entitled "Permafrost young researchers get their hands dirty: the PYRN thermal state of permafrost IPY project" and asked questions about PYRN; Sonia and Philip were there to provide answers. This was a good first approach to meeting new permafrost researchers. With a glass of wine, the ice is more easily broken!
We are very pleased to report that the PYRN/APECS social event at the EGU general assembly in Vienna Austria was not only a fun time but a great success! On behalf of the PYRN executive committee we were very pleased that about 35 members were present late into the night at the famous "Bermuda Bar." This presented a key opportunity to socialize and network, making contacts within and between PYRN and APECS.
In addition, three members of the PYRN executive committee met in Vienna to discuss upcoming events and meetings. One focus of this discussion was the upcoming EUCOP III permafrost conference in Svalbard, Norway in June 2010. PYRN is hoping to have a large portion of our young researchers at this event.
Details about EUCOP III will follow in the very near future.
2. PYRN-national representatives: new faces!
Germany: J.-C. Otto is succeeded by M. Krautblatter
Norway: H. Juliussen is succeeded by Karianne Lilleoren
"Good bye" to the leaving national representatives and many thanks for all your efforts and contributions, making the PYRN group a lively and interesting network!!
Congratulations and a warm welcome to the new national representatives!!
3. PYRN-Wiley contest
Both PYRN and Wiley are vey pleased to announce that David Bressan has won the contest and will be receiving a one year subscription to Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, the world's leading permafrost journal.
