Job description:

The Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge
invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to study
permafrost changes in the Arctic on a project funded by Eni S.P.A. The
position is part of a new permafrost programme that includes Dr Poul
Christoffersen, Prof. Julian Dowdeswell and one other postdoctoral
researcher.

The successful applicant will work in an interdisciplinary team of
cryospheric scientists and be responsible for developing a numerical
permafrost model to explore surface and subsurface processes in the
North American Arctic.

The post starts on 1 March 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Funds for this post are available for up to 3 years, depending on the
level of appointment. The salary range is £27,183-£35,469.

Applicants with the following background and experience are encouraged
to apply: a PhD in Earth Science, Engineering or similar subject, a
good theoretical understanding of cold-region processes and previous
experience in developing numerical models. Expertise in permafrost
modelling is highly desirable, but not a requirement. Familiarity with
soil freezing processes and ice-water thermodynamics would be an asset.

Applications containing a full C.V., names and details of two
professional referees and a completed PD18 form (parts I and III only),
should be sent to the Research Administrator, Department of Geography,
Downing Place, Cambridge CB2 3EN, UK

contacted for further information on the post (pc350@cam.ac.uk).

Closing date for applications: 30 January 2009. Vacancy Reference No.:
LD04481. Job listing: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/jobs/. The
University of Cambridge values diversity and is committed to equality
of opportunity. It has a responsibility to ensure that all employees
