1. PYRN award at AGU
For those of you attending the AGU conference, to be held in San Francisco in a month from now (Dec. 15-19), the U.S. Permafrost Association (USPA, http://uspermafrost.org/) has generously offered to sponsor two awards, $200 each, to PYRN members for the best presentation (oral or poster) on permafrost. All attendees of the AGU Fall Meeting are free to register to compete for this. More information at http://pyrn.ways.org/pyrn-awards-agu-apply-now.
In addition, The U.S. Permafrost Association will also hold its Annual Meeting, with free refreshments, during AGU. You are invited to join the USPA on Monday, 15 December, from 7:30–9:00 pm in the Marriott Hotel, Pacific Room A.

- A PhD or postdoc position related to the investigation of paleoclimate using stables isotopes in ground ice is opened at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. 4. Upcoming conferences
A large number of conferences and deadlines are coming up with events and opportunities for young researchers, including travel grants:

Arctic Change will feature a student day where PYRN activities will be featured as a proxy for international collaboration
- Arctic Science Summit Week 2009, 23-28 March 2009, Bergen, Norway
Deadline: December 15th. A large number of travel grants will be awarded to young researchers and a large number of those are reserved to Russian participants. Permafrost should be largely represented so apply massively!!

At least five sessions will be devoted to permafrost research at the EGU meeting. You can look them up on the website.
