The NICOP organizing committee and the PYRN USA representatives have
established a small committee led by Andrew Balser to organize young
researchers activities at NICOP. We’ll let you know soon of the
expected highlights of this program. In the mean time, we encourage you
to register for the Ninth International Conference on Permafrost on its
webpage: http://www.nicop.org. -
PYRN award 2007
The Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) awarded the second IPA-
PYRN award at the International Conference "Cryogenic processes of
polar regions". The PYRN award was funded by the IPA and the Academy of
science of the Gubernskaya district. Three awards, consisting of 200$
and a PYRN T-shirt each were granted to the following authors:
- Irina Khomenko, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia
- Viacheslav Stakhov, Institute of physical, chemical and biological problems in soil science, RAS, Pushchino, Russia
- Przemystaw Zubel, Nicolaus Copernicus University Toruń, Poland
We congratulate warmly the winners and are already announcing that the
Third PYRN award will be granted at the Ninth International Conference
on Permafrost in Fairbanks. More details on the award recipients will
be soon available on the PYRN website -
Travel fellowships to the NGPR symposium
The New Generation Polar Research (NGPR) Symposium, will be held on
4-11 May 2008, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. The symposium will
provide a venue where young researchers can learn from each other and
from veteran polar scientists and forge collegial relationships with
their peers. Advanced students and PhD graduates who completed or plan
to complete their degree between 1 January 2002 and 31 March 2009 are
eligible to apply for full travel fellowships. More information on: http://ccar.colorado.edu/ngpr/. - Travel fellowships for young researchers to the conference “Global
Environmental Change: The Role of the Arctic Region” to be held on
13-17 October 2007 in Nynäshamn, Sweden. Some grants are available for
young researchers to cover the conference fee and possibly part of the
travel costs. Deadline for submission of abstracts: July 30th, 2007.

The Cryosphere Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union seeks
nominations for the Cryosphere Young Investigator Award for 2007. A
nominee should be within five years of receiving their PhD. The award
will consist of a $500 stipend to support travel of the awardee to the
AGU Fall 2007 Meeting in San Francisco. More info here:

The “Science Friday” show featured a panel discussion with several
scientists involved in permafrost research in Alaska. The show is

Dmitry Streletsky from the University of Delaware, USA, was granted the
Raplh Stockman Tarr Award for best student paper in cryospheric

"Permafrost and Seasonally Frozen Ground Under a Changing Climate" You

We now made three wallpapers available on the website (http://www.pyrn.org)
, thanks to Tim Haltigin. We are now looking for pictures of polygons,
mud boils, retrogressive thaw slumps, solifluction lobes, ice complex,
massive ice bodies, etc.. Don’t hesitate to send us your high
resolution pictures.
