Two nice opportunities of travel funding - St. Petersburg and Fairbanks
These two opportunities should be listed soon in the newsletter, but I thought I'd list them here so that you can send an application in a timely way:
1.Travel funding for Summer school - The Modeling of Arctic Climate - International Arctic Research Centre
26 May - 7 June 2008
International Arctic Research Center
University of Alaska Fairbanks
Application Deadline: Friday, 1 February 2008http://www.iarc.uaf.edu/education_outreach/summer/2008/
IARC will provide support for travel, on-campus lodging, and meals through funding from the National Science Foundation and BASC.
The two-week summer school will bring together graduate students, young scientists, and specialists in arctic climate and climate modeling in order to convey to a new generation of scientists the opportunities and challenges of arctic climate modeling. Specifically, young scientists will gain:
- perspectives on the key issues in arctic climate from observational, diagnostic, and modeling perspectivesexposure to the types of models used in addressing arctic climate and climate change
- hands-on experience in the analysis of climate model output or climate
The first week will be spent in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the second week in Barrow, Alaska, in coordination with the Barrow Arctic Sciences Consortium (BASC).
Key topics to be covered in the lectures include, but are not limited to:
- Arctic climate: key characteristics and processes;
- Feedbacks in the arctic system (e.g., surface albedo, clouds, water vapor, circulation);
- Arctic climate variations: past, ongoing, and projected;
- Energy balance and single-column models applied to the Arctic;
- Global climate models: an overview;
- Modeling of the sea ice and the Arctic Ocean;
- Modeling of frozen soil regimes, especially permafrost;
- Arctic ecosystems and climate change; and
- Trace gases, aerosols, and chemistry: importance for climate changes.
Applications should be sent as early as possible, but no
later than Friday, 1 February 2008, to:Chris Lace, E-mail: clace@iarc.uaf.edu
Decisions about admission and financial support will be made by 21 February 2008, for applications received by the deadline. Applicants should submit a one-page statement of interest, short resume that includes academic background, and letter of recommendation from a faculty member or supervisor.

The open science conference is being held 8th - 11th July and participation is strongly encouraged (www.scar-iasc-ipy2008.org).
Application deadline: 29th February 2008
Notification of successful application: March 2008
PhD students, post-doctoral researchers through to junior faculty (or equivalent) conducting polar research from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Hi everybody,
does someone know a cheap accommodation for Nicop in Fairbanks?
It would be nice if some of PYRN members who are going to NIcop could go to the same place, or even share a room.
Let me know.
