Presenting Studies and reaserch in Svalbard at "Youth north chalotte summit"

By Daniels Karin Amby - Posted on 15 August 2008

So, there I whas,, late as always I had made the last changes in my presentation at 02:00, and now at 14:30 I whas there infront of ca 45 young people from Sweden, Finland Norway and Russia. That had all been discussing climate change and their visions for the north chalotte in 2020.  Eaven togh I am seldom nervous to speak in front of people I whas quite curious how this would turn out. what I also realized just before my presentation whas that these people know polarbears only as big white bears who are serioulsy endangered by climate change, how where they gonna react when I talked aboute the impotance of beeing able to defend yourself against them, eaven possibly having to shoot one?

For the first time I whas  presenting something from my time on svalbard outside Longyearbyen. The theme of my presentation whas "Studies and fieldwork in Svalbard, hands on experience from arctic climate reaserch."

Offcourse a part of my presentation whas on my fieldwork in TSP-Norway. So now there is 45 more people out there that knows what permafrost is, and that has a clue of what a resistivity mesurement or a "Bore hole" is.. And what a Multiyear old sea ice ecosystem looks like. And some other interesting facts and just random stuff about svalbard and the arctic. As always when talking aboute Svalbard people are very exited, and wants to know more, is it cold, is there many polarbears around town, and so on... I got many positive comments, but theone that I will remember the longest whas one guy saying:

"Its like whole new world that I did not eaven new existed you told us about"

Maby we "arctic or permafrost people" need to get out and talk more to non scientists! Some people know that the permafrost is melting, and that it releases mehane doing so, but very few know the other possible concequenses.

So to the rest of you, as a small challange, Speak up! And tell us here on PYRN what It whas like! Maby at the local school, for some youth organisation or whateaver.. I'm sure there is many people who are intrerested these days..

solong for now.. and soon soon (in less than 2 months) I will be back and have permafrost under my feet again :-)
