I am the graduate student intern at U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and I am happy to announce that we are going to expand the Permafrost Tunnel near Fox, Alaska. There is an informational meeting at the AGU fall meeting, here is the official description:

A major expansion of the Permafrost Tunnel 
near Fox, Alaska will form a key part of the Alaska Permafrost
Research Center (APRC). The expansion is being headed by U.S. Army
Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and
University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering
(INE). The tunnel expansion will more than double the current tunnel
length and is designed to promote research into critical areas related
to permafrost science and engineering. Details of the project will be
presented, and ideas and comments are welcome.

The meeting will be on Wednesday, December 16 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm in the Arctic Community Meeting Room, the same room as the PYRN forum early that day. The location specifically is Pacific Room J on the 4th floor of the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, located at 55 Fourth Street, one block from the Moscone Center West.

The tunnel expansion will incorporate research needs into the design, in order to promote research in current critical areas. So attend and give your ideas, because in the end the tunnel will handed over to the young researchers today.
