Giving on the work and leaving Longyearbyen..

By Daniels Karin Amby - Posted on 22 July 2008

So, Now, over a month since I left svalbard for this time, I finaly write again..

The theory with the cold temperatures seemed to be true, since the rest of the mesurements worked just fine as the temerature rose. My last three mesurements I made with new people to teach them to take over after me when I left. It whas a bit sad, but still a good feeling. Now I whas theone teaching someone how it works. My first mesuremet whas soo diffrent from theirs.. It whas cold, dark, and I did not get any owerwew of the site. Here we where walking out in the bright sunlight, having to cross meltwater streams to get to the site... When I did my firts mesutrement I  did not really need to know how to do It since I just occasionally stepped in for someone else. And there whas someone experienced along with me. Then I happened to continue and finnaly I got a hang of how it works Smile For Katleen and Svea it whas important to understand eavrything at once, since they where soon taking over. Offcourse they could always ask Håvard, but still they needed to understand how it works much faster than me. I hope I did a OK job as a teacher. But it seems to have worked fine. Laughing

Right now I give guided tours to tourists, and work on making a exhebition about IPY, but in autum I will be back in Longyearbyen. Am already looking forwards to it.. I had my fresh milk, and my walks withoute a rifle on my back. I have been swiming withoute a dry suit.. Now I'm defenetly ready for Svalbard and the arctic again..  But I have to wait, just a little bit longer....

Dear Karin!

You express what I feel and probably of few of us who lived, studied and worked on Svalbard for a while and had to leave the place for any reason. Back in Germany I also painful miss just to go out and measure! And "my" polygons! Seems like I got some serious sentiments for ice and cold and processes in the ground ;) Would love to see the colorful 2D resistivity profil data from last year as a flipbook, Karin, we definitly missed the action part of summer thawing! Here are no such secrets left in the ground, no permafrost, booooring ;(

Hope to see and measure again with you out in Adventdalen or Endalen as soon as possible!
