The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of

Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for the first international

Arctic System Model Workshop to be held on 19-21 May 2008, in Boulder,

Colorado. The workshop will address a growing need for numerical tools

to downscale information from global models to the temporal and spatial

resolution of in situ and satellite measurements and scales appropriate

for planning for economic and social change in the Arctic.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss viable approaches for development

of an international community Arctic System Model. Applications are

invited from researchers developing and coupling regional ocean-ice,

atmospheric, terrestrial, ecosystem, glacier and social dimension

models, and others who are keenly interested in contributing to

development of a coupled regional arctic model. It is anticipated that

the ensuing Community Arctic System Model will capitalize on

developments in software to interface clusters of component models,

enabling modeling groups to apply their own work and removing the

limitation of selecting single ocean, atmospheric, or other component

models for the project.

Ultimately, the Community Arctic System Model Project aims to develop a

suite of high resolution tools to understand the Arctic as an integrated

system, refine model inter-comparison, reduce uncertainty in arctic

climate projections, and provide meaningful tools for stakeholders to

plan for future conditions in the Arctic.

Researchers should submit a brief CV and one-page cover letter

summarizing interest in being involved in the project to Chris Lace

(clace@iarc.uaf.edu), or to:
